their peer support teams to be here and help. the chp continued its constant presence here at the hospital in walnut creek this morning. officers are committed to making sure injured officer kenyon youngstrom is never alone. they are offering support to his family and the colleagues who worked-w >> somber. a lot of reflection. a lot of question marks as to how this type of incident could occur. >> reporter: youngstrom was shot by a driver he pulled over on i-680 in alamo yesterday morning. another officer who arrived as back-upshot and killed the driver. colleagues describe 37-year-old youngstrom as a man with his feet planned firmly on the ground. he's married and has four kids. >> a real conscientious officer, caring, family man, christian man that is going to get his family and us through this, he has a strong

christian faith. >> reporter: youngstrom has worked at the chp for seven years. >> we've been getting calls, whatever you need, we are here for you, banning together there's strength in young at this time. >> reporter: youngstrom was shot in the neck and is on life support his colleagues are trying to brace themselves for what is next. >> we've been told the injuries are not compatible with human life. having been told that, that puts things into perspective. and it also prepares us for the inevitable. >> reporter: a vigil is planned for youngstrom and his family tonight in cordelia he and his family live in fairfield that will be at 7:30 tonight. chp officers tell me they never leave the side of an injured or deceased officer. they will stay there all the way until the officer is buried.

amy hollyfield, abc7 news. at this point, authorities are not release the identity of the gunman. the jeep stopped by the chp officer on 680 is registered to a 36-year-old man whose last known residence was in sausalito. the man's father is in alaska. he told us his son has a masters from san francisco state he's been a software developer for several companies. katie marzullo continues our coverage. >> reporter: we've seen an outpouring of support here at the office this is where officer youngstrom worked. if you look at the front door you can see the flowers, also this morning earlier for a couple of hours if you take a look at this video, a group of three people took it upon themselves to stand guard at the driveway holding american flags. they told me they wanted to

show support of the officers arriving for work in morning and were adamant that the story is not about them. the man i interviewed did not want to give his name. >> we do support them with their fallen comrade right now, it has to be a tough moment to go out the shift. >> gentleman got up to do his work, to make a living for his family and he doesn't get to go home and we are hoping he does get to go home soon. >> reporter: you can hear how choked up peggy was as she dropped off flowers. she told me she doesn't know the officer or have members of law enforcement in her family she just feels so awful about the situation. no doubt this tribute will continue to grow at the chp office. it is a somber atmosphere inside a spokeswoman tells me that officerm a

gun. no officers were injured in the incident. the search for 15-year-old sierra lamar received a boost of star power today when a congresswoman made appearance at the search center in morgan hill. sierra lamar disappeared six months ago, her family and friends have not given up the search for her. terry mcsweeney has more. >> reporter: the congresswoman talked to the parents of the girl missing since the middle of march. she did not join in the search but her presence attracted the media which reminds people sire is still missing. >> it is a remarkable thing that six months out people are still coming, twice a week to try and find her, but also in doing so, by giving support to this family. >> reporter: her parents used the visit to pub -- push for legislation that would require schools to notify parents immediately if a child does not make it to first period.

when sierra lamar disappeared 7:00 in the morning her parents did not find out she had not made it to school until that evening. the -- >> we interrupt the story because right now that news conference is getting underway by the contra costa county sheriff's office. this is jimmy lee, director of public affairs. the sheriff's office chp and the d.a.'s office went to his home to serve a search warrant. his parents who live in oregon, have been contacted and they are working with the detectives and are cooperative. detectives at this time are still trying to develop some kind of profile on the suspect christopher lacey. we know of one prior arrest in 2006 in marin county for a d ui. beyond that, we don't see anything else on his record.

detectives also searched the vehicle the jeep wrangler inside the vehicle they found a loaded semi auto handgun in addition to two loaded magazines. there was also a knife that was found in the vehicle. this morning the autopsy for laci took place the cause of death is listed as gunshot wound to the head. -- i want to clarify the events that led up to yesterday's traffic stop on 680. it may seem somewhat confusing with two officers involved but we'll try to make it as clear as possible. at about 8:20 a.m. chp officer kenyon youngstrom and another chp officer his partner, responded to a report of a traffic accident that had occurred somewhere near rutger

road and 680. officer youngstrom responded to that call he went to that location and he was not able to locate an accident scene therefore, he cleared that detail. officer youngstrom then agreed to meet his partner on highway 680 southbound to handle a dead deer call. you might recall there was a dead deer on the side of the roadway. as he was on his way to that location his partner told him that he was going to conduct a traffic stop on a green jeep ler for having an obstructived that -- wrangler for having an obstructed license plate. at that time youngstrom was on the shoulder of the highway. he stepped from his vehicle to direct the jeep on to the shoulder when he saw it. therefore, at that time, his partner initiated the traffic

stop so you can visualize that now the jeep is between two vehicles. officer youngstrom then approached the jeep on the driver's side and made contact with lacey. looking at the dashcam video it shows that officer youngstrom and lacey had a short conversation. then, without warning lacey pulled out a gun and shot officer youngstrom in the head. officer youngstrom then fell to the ground on the freeway on lane four. his partner who was approaching from the rear heard the gun shot, saw his partner go down, withdrew or drew his own service weapon and shot at the jeep striking lacey, critically. the officer then proceeded to render first-aid to officer youngstrom. there were also citizens that stopped to help as well.

in the morning her parents did not find out she had not made it to school until that evening. >> if children don't go to home room class, don't show up at their first class that there's a notification made to the parents. obviously, given the advance state of software these days, that cannot be too difficult a task. >> reporter: 21-year-old antolin garcia-torres has been charged with the kidnapping and murder of sierra. police say her dna has been found in his car, but no trace of the girl. her mother is hoping he will speak up. >> we know he does have answers and i'm hoping and praying that he will come forward to end the mystery. >> reporter: this is not the only event dedicated to sierra lamar today. tonight 7 p.m., morgan hill city hall there is going to be a candlelight vigil. organizers say they are going to be placing the candles in such a way to spell out a message to sierra, still in the hopes of bringing her

contra costa county's news conference. >> they just wrapped that up this is the story involving the chp officer shot on i-680 yesterday during a traffic stop. >> investigators have identified the suspect as christopher lacy. they say he died from a gunshot wound to the head shot by the partner of officer kenyon youngstrom. in the news conference they said that the suspect used a semi-automatic glock, a pistol which is what they say he used on officer youngstrom who stopped to meet his partner. >> this is an is didn't after that tragic shooting they had to shutdown the interstate, 680 for several hours because they were investigating this and put tents over the freeway capturing shell casings so they could find out what happened. >> officer youngstrom remains
